The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
