Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
